1. Who We Are
AirWeather is developed and operated by:
dataWorks GmbH
Seestrasse 59
8702 Zollikon
Switzerland
Email: support@data-works.ch
We are the data controller for the processing described in this policy. We have not appointed a Data Protection Officer, as we are not required to under Swiss or EU law.
2. The Short Version
- AirWeather has no user accounts and no servers of our own. We cannot identify you personally.
- Your location is processed only on your device to find nearby airports and show your position on the map. It is never sent to us, and weather data is requested by airport code — not by your coordinates.
- We use Google Firebase for anonymous usage statistics and crash reports so we can improve the app.
- Purchases are handled entirely by Apple or Google. We never see your payment details.
The rest of this policy explains this in detail.
3. What Data Is Processed
3.1 Location (on-device only)
With your permission, AirWeather uses your device's location ("while using the app" only) to:
- find the airports nearest to you, and
- show your position on the map.
Your coordinates are processed locally on your device and are not transmitted to us. Requests to weather services are made using airport identifiers (ICAO codes), not your coordinates. If you deny location access, you can still use the app by searching for airports manually.
3.2 Weather, NOTAM and airport data requests
To show weather reports, forecasts, NOTAMs and airport information, the app contacts these services directly from your device:
- NOAA / Aviation Weather Center (aviationweather.gov, tgftp.nws.noaa.gov, USA) — METAR, TAF and SIGMET data
- FAA NOTAM API (external-api.faa.gov, USA) — NOTAMs
- OurAirports data (hosted on GitHub Pages, USA) — airport, runway and frequency database
Like any internet request, these services technically receive your IP address and the requested airport codes. We do not control their processing; they are operated by US government agencies and GitHub, Inc.
3.3 Map display
The app uses Google Maps (Google LLC, USA / Google Ireland Ltd. for EEA/Swiss users) to display maps. When the map is shown, Google receives technical data such as your IP address, device information and the map area viewed. See Google's privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
3.4 Usage statistics (Firebase Analytics)
We use Google Firebase Analytics to understand how the app is used (e.g. which screens are opened, app version, device model, operating system, coarse region derived from IP). This data is linked to a random app-instance ID, not to your name or email — we have no way to connect it to you personally.
- Legal basis: our legitimate interest in improving the app (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; Art. 31 nDSG)
- Retention: user-level data up to 14 months (Firebase default), aggregated statistics thereafter
- Privacy: https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy
3.5 Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics)
If the app crashes, Firebase Crashlytics sends us a crash report containing the technical state of the app (stack trace, device model, OS version, a crash-instance identifier). Crash reports contain no location data and no personal identifiers.
- Legal basis: our legitimate interest in keeping the app stable (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR)
- Retention: 90 days (Firebase default)
3.6 Purchases
In-app purchases and subscriptions are processed entirely by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). We receive only an anonymous confirmation that a purchase is valid — never your name, address or payment details. Apple's and Google's own privacy policies apply to the payment transaction.
- Legal basis: performance of contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR)
3.7 Settings stored on your device
Your preferences (e.g. units, favorite airports) are stored locally on your device only and are deleted when you uninstall the app.
4. What We Don't Do
- We do not require or offer user accounts.
- We do not show ads and do not use advertising or tracking SDKs.
- We do not sell or share personal data for marketing.
- We do not profile you or make automated decisions about you.
5. International Data Transfers
The services above (Google/Firebase, NOAA, FAA, GitHub) are operated from the USA. Transfers to Google are covered by the EU–US and Swiss–US Data Privacy Framework and/or Standard Contractual Clauses. Requests to NOAA, FAA and GitHub are technically necessary to deliver the content you request.
6. Your Rights
Under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (nDSG) and, where applicable, the EU GDPR, you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you,
- have inaccurate data corrected,
- have your data deleted,
- receive your data in a portable format,
- object to processing based on legitimate interest,
- lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
Practical note: because we hold no account data and analytics are not linked to your identity, in most cases there is simply no personal data we could look up for you. You can stop all analytics and crash data collection at any time by uninstalling the app, and remove location access in your device settings.
To exercise your rights, contact us at the address in Section 1. We respond within 30 days.
Supervisory authorities:
- Switzerland: Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC), Feldeggweg 1, CH-3003 Bern, https://www.edoeb.admin.ch
- EU: your national data protection authority
7. Children
AirWeather is a specialist tool for pilots and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
8. Security
All network connections use TLS encryption. We hold no user database that could be breached; the limited analytics and crash data reside with Google Firebase under its security measures.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy when the app's data processing changes. The current version is always available at this address; material changes will be highlighted in the app's release notes.
